Founded
in 2002, Alborz University of Information and Communication
Technology aims to educate high caliber graduates in the
growing number of professions and disciplines related to
the knowledge economy, as it is envisaged for the future
of Iran. The use of technology enhanced educational tools
and resources, the Internet (and its associated services),
e-learning, the groundwork of “life long learning”,
and new approaches to teaching and learning are corner stones
of this university. The university could be categorized
as an “online higher education institution”
or simply a “virtual university”.
The
Information Age is upon us. The number of Internet users
and Internet services world-wide continues to grow steeply.
More than half of the wealth in the developed countries
is now based on the production and distribution of knowledge.
The new Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)
have created global markets for a vast variety of goods
and services. Skilled and educated knowledge workers are
needed to explore and further expand this already very large
global industry. The new economics for developing countries
also looks at ICT as providing tools for releasing the untapped
human potential and strengths as well as creative talent,
and knowledge embodied in people.
Alborz
ICT University utilizes tools and resources associated with
Internet and computer technologies to deliver educational
services that are exclusively related to the wide spectrum
of a knowledge economy’s needs and necessities. The
University aims to significantly increase degree-awarded,
formal educational opportunities throughout the country
for secondary school graduates who cannot attend conventional
universities due to the severe capacity limitations of the
current tertiary education system in Iran. The University
also provides educational opportunities via its non-degree
programs and courses for those who wish to acquire new skills
and knowledge for various reasons.
Higher
education today requires total flexibility and new approaches
to teaching and learning in order to make graduates capable
of operating in competitive and highly skilled and knowledge
demanding working environments. It is believed that Alborz
ICT University has the potential to deliver highly qualified
and competent technologists who can find exciting jobs in
the future of national and global markets of the knowledge
economy.
